The Race to Create the World’s Tallest Building

In the late-1920s, as New York’s economy boomed like never before, builders were in a mad dash to erect the world’s largest skyscraper. The main competition was between the Empire Sate Building, 40 Wall Street’s Bank of Manhattan building (Trump Towers) and the Chrysler Building,

The Empire State Building is a 102 storey Art Deco skyscraper completed in 1931, completed in a record 20 months and a total 443,2m tall including it’s antenna. It was the world’s tallest building for nearly 40 years until the completion of the World Trade Center’s North Tower in Lower Manhattan in 1970. It is currently the 5th tallest in the USA and 28th tallest in the world. Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, it was again the tallest building in New York until the new One World Trade Center was completed in April 2012.

The Chrysler Building is also an Art Deco–style skyscraper located in New York City. At 318.9 m, the structure was the world’s tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. It is the tallest brick building in the world with a steel framework.

40 Wall Street Tower was completed in 1930 and was the world’s tallest building at 283m high. It was only the 38m spire that was secretively constructed within the frame of the Chrysler Building that allowed the Chrysler Building to surpassed 40 Wall Street as the tallest building in the world, fulfilling Chrysler’s dream.
